What is rhodium

Rhodium is one of the most precious metals in the world, with platinum, palladium, ruthenium, iridium and osmium, it is part of a group of elements called platinum group metals.

These metals have similar physical and chemical properties, but rhodium is the rarest and most valuable of all. There are no pure rhodium mines, but rhodium is obtained exclusively as a by-product of platinum and nickel mining activities.

How rhodium plating takes place

After carefully cleaning and refining the jewel, it is immersed in a rhodium-based solution ( galvanic bath ). This electrolysis process gives the jewel a very thin layer of rhodium, usually 1 micron.

The rhodium plating of gold and silver objects not only has an aesthetic function but also allows them to be protected from oxidation and wear.

However, it must be taken into consideration that since there is a very thin layer of rhodium that covers the jewel, it is possible that it wears out over time, and therefore the jewel loses the shine that was given by the rhodium plating.

Please note
Precisely for this reason we do not recommend rhodium plating on yellow or rose gold jewelery or watches to make them look like white gold.

Cleaning

It is absolutely forbidden to clean rhodium-plated jewelery with abrasive cloths or liquids, as these agents could wear away the rhodium plating . While it is recommended to use a soft cloth moistened only with cold water.
