Since gold in nature is extremely ductile and malleable, it is unusable for making jewelery or other commonly used objects, for this reason it is integrated with other alloys in order to make it more resistant and easily workable.
When gold is alloyed with other metals, its purity is measured in carats or thousandths .
Below are all the existing carats of jewels:
8 CARATS = 333 THOUSANDTHS OF A GRAM = TITLE 333
9 CARATS = 375 THOUSANDTHS OF A GRAM = TITLE 375
12 CARATS = 500 THOUSANDTHS OF A GRAM = TITLE 500
10 CARATS = 417 THOUSANDTHS OF A GRAM = TITLE 417
14 CARATS = 585 THOUSANDTHS OF A GRAM = TITLE 585
18 CARATS = 750 THOUSANDTHS OF A GRAM = TITLE 750
21 CARATS = 875 THOUSANDTHS OF A GRAM = TITLE 875
22 CARATS = 916 THOUSANDTHS OF A GRAM = TITLE 916
24 CARATS = 999 THOUSANDTHS OF A GRAM = TITLE 999
In the case of gold alloys, therefore, one "karat" is equivalent to one part of pure gold out of a total of 24 parts of the metal constituting the alloy .
It follows, for example, that the wording 18 carats indicates that the alloy is made up of 18 parts of pure gold and 6 parts of other metals and is abbreviated with the acronyms C t or K t or predominantly with just K often placed next to the number without any spaces, for example 18k . The highest purity gold is therefore 24k carats , that is, 24 parts of "pure" gold out of a total of 24 and is indicated with the acronym 24k .
The term carat as a unit of measurement for diamonds
The term carat is also used as a unit of measurement for diamonds and precious stones, in fact the carat (Cm = metric carat) corresponds to 0.20 grams.
So BE CAREFUL not to confuse it with the carat (Kt) which, as explained previously, is the fineness of precious alloys.
Another unit of measurement smaller than the carat is the grain, which represents 1/4 of a carat , i.e. 0.05 grams .
The hundredth of a carat is also frequently used in jewelry, for example if a ring is set with a half-carat diamond, you may hear it pronounced with the term " 50 hundredths of a carat" or " 50 points".
