Doğal haliyle altın, kuvars kayalarında filamentler, lekeler ve folyolar halinde bulunur ve genellikle gümüş mineralleriyle karıştırılır.

Veya nehir yataklarında kumla karışık olarak tane ve külçe halinde de bulunabilir.

Altın madeni

Altın ekstraksiyonu üç farklı işlemle yapılabilir: düzleştirme , birleştirme ve siyanürleme . Ancak her zaman bu üç işlemin birden kullanılması gerekli değildir.

Pürüzsüzleştirme , yavaş bir su akışını sağlayarak altının ayrılmasını sağlayan uzun kaplar kullanılarak gerçekleştirilir. Hatta altından daha hafif olan atık malzeme su ile birlikte sürüklenirken, küçük altın parçaları da kabın dibine çöker.

Birleştirme ile ham maddeler toz haline getirilir ve daha sonra cıva ile birleştirilir. Daha sonra amalgamın damıtılmasıyla değerli metal geri kazanılır.

Siyanürleme en önemli ekstraksiyon işlemidir. Altın cevherleri bir potasyum siyanür çözeltisi ile işlenir, hava varlığında altın erir ve auro-potasyum siyanüre dönüşür. Altının bu çözeltiden ayrılması çinko ile ve elektrolitik olarak gerçekleşir.

Altının özellikleri

Altın doğal haliyle kırmızımsı sarı renktedir, parlaktır, değiştirilemez ve dövülebilir (metallerin en dövülebiliridir). Bu son nedenden dolayı ve işlenebilmesini sağlamak için diğer metallerle alaşımlanır. Kral suyu, klorlu su ve alkalin siyanürler dışında hiçbir yaygın asit onu etkilemez. Erime noktası 1063°, kaynama noktası 2600°'dir.
